The Hardest Part of a Winter Morning
Every winter, I face the same small battle at six o'clock in the morning. My alarm rings, I open my eyes, and I immediately feel the cold air on my face. My room is dark, my bed is warm, and every part of my body tells me to stay where I am. Even though I know I have to get up, I am always reluctant【形】気が進まない・しぶしぶの to get out from under my blanket. I used to say, "Just five more minutes," and then hear the alarm ring again.
For a long time, I thought this meant I was simply lazy. However, when I talked about it with my classmates, I found that almost everyone had the same problem. One friend said she was reluctant【形】気が進まない・しぶしぶの to get up because the floor was so cold. Another said the hardest part was not waking up but actually getting out of bed. It seems that the problem is not the task itself, but the moment of starting it.
So last December, I decided to make that moment easier. The night before, I set the heater's timer so that my room would be warm by six, and I put my clothes under my blanket to keep them warm. I also placed my alarm clock on my desk, far from my bed, so that I would have to get out of bed to turn it off. Finally, I left my vocabulary book open on the desk. Once I was standing there, sitting down to study felt natural.
These small changes did not make winter mornings pleasant, but they made them manageable. On some days, I still get out of bed reluctantly【形】気が進まない・しぶしぶの, and I still complain about the cold. The difference is that I now start studying almost every morning, not only on the days when I feel motivated.
I have learned that feeling reluctant【形】気が進まない・しぶしぶの is not a sign of weakness. It is a normal feeling that everyone has. What matters is preparing a path that is easy to follow, even when your heart says no. Tomorrow morning, I will be cold again, but my book will be waiting for me.
